2007-11-11 2010-01-14 ICAO codes can represent big numbers so they are most commonly written in hexadecimal format which keeps them to 6 alphanumeric digits. As a result of this convention you may hear or see them referred to as simply the aircraft “hex code.” The code is programmed into the aircraft’s Mode S or ADS-B transponder when it is installed. If it begins with 278, the 6th through 10th character is dictated by bits 41-64 – the ICAO code. th6 character reflects the 3rd digit in ICAO code. th7 character reflects the 4th digit in ICAO code. th8 character reflects the 5th digit in ICAO code.
